When 26-year-old Ashley Brady saw that someone had parked in her designated handicapped spot at her apartment complex, she left a polite note asking that they refrain from doing so in the future. The response she received was appalling.
After losing her leg in an accident in 2014, Brady is slowly regaining her independence and relearning how to walk. However, one of the most challenging aspects of this endeavor is navigating the snow and ice in the parking lot of her apartment building. To make her trek more manageable, Brady requested a handicapped parking spot near the entrance of the building, thus greatly reducing her chances of slipping and falling. After discovering that one of her neighbors had taken her designated spot without a placard or license indicating that he or she was handicapped, Brandy decided to leave a note on the person's car. The note was not particularly inflammatory and simply asked that the neighbor consider what she must endure on a daily basis.
The neighbor's shockingly rude response reads as follows:
"Hey handicap! First, never place your hands on my car again! Second, honey you ain't the only one with 'struggles.' You want pity go to a one leg support group! You messed with the wrong one! I don't care what your note said shove it, but you touch my car again I will file a report, I am not playing! I let the office know the cry baby one leg touches my property I will cause trouble so go cry your struggles to someone who cares cause I'm walking away with both mine! -[expletive]"
This message is truly shameful, but rather than let that injustice go to rest, Brady and her sister posted the note to Facebook to spread awareness about the sorts of challenges handicapped people face daily. They have received an outpouring of support online. In an interview with her local news station, Brady states that she "got a lot of feedback online from a lot of other amputees who have been in similar situations...You're not just going to get what you want by being bullying. She told me to cry to someone who cares, so I went to the internet and it turns out a lot of people care." Here at SFG, we fully commend Brady for not backing down, even in the face of hurtful and ignorant comments.
