This film may be short, but the message it carries is very powerful. It depicts a teenage girl and her crush texting, which seems innocent enough, until the boy asks for a picture of her wearing the new shirt she bought at the mall. What happens after she sends the picture is a prime example of what happens everyday to young kids engaging in some aspect of social media or texting. The presence of cyber bullying is as real today as it has ever been. Cyber bullying is when social media or electronic forms of communication are used to harass, bully, threaten, or intimidate another person.
According to statistics posted on Bullying Statistics, "Around half of teens have been the victims of cyber bullying. More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyberthreats online. Only 1 in 10 teens tells a parent if they have been a cyber bully victim." The problem with cyber bullying is that it can be as pervasive as our technology today is, which, as we all know, is very pervasive. One of the most important things parents can do if they suspect their kids engaging or falling victim to cyber bullying is talk to them. Regardless of whether or not kids want to bring it up with their parents, communication can make a world of difference in not only saving a teen's self-esteem, but in severe cases, their lives.
