On Thursday July 30, 2015, in Peducah, Kentucky, a man heard a strange banging noise coming from the dumpster that sits outside the Fernwood Apartments at the intersection of Berger Road and Goodman Drive.  Thinking it was odd, he walked outside to investigate and noticed a 17-year-old boy walking away from the receptacle; he wasn't prepared for what he would discover upon getting closer. As he neared the dumpster, he heard the unmistakable cries of an infant. When he opened the lid of the dumpster, his fears were confirmed, and he immediately alerted police.

Sgt. David Shepherd from the McCracken County Sheriff's Department responded to the call and was utterly shocked when confronted with the situation, telling Fox10News, "No matter any law enforcement training you provide for us, articulate or tactical or anything like that; and then you place a newborn baby in front of us. There's not normal training for that." Paramedics arrived on scene and treated the infant before taking it to  a local hospital.

The parents of the infant were rather easily identified after the case was linked back to a 15-year-old girl who had received emergency medical services for post-birth bleeding only hours after the baby was found. Her family later told the Associated Press that they had no idea the 15-year-old was pregnant. The 17-year-old was arrested by police after the infant was rescued, and was identified as the boyfriend of the baby's mother, though it is unconfirmed that he is the father of the baby. Sgt. Darrin Frommeyer of the McCracken County Sheriff's Department said the 17-year-old was charged with attempted murder, first-degree criminal abuse, and tampering with evidence. Because both teens are minors, their names have not been released.

A Paducah mother of four, Heather Baumgart, is now collecting donations for the abandoned infant, explaining to WPSD6, "I was a young mother myself, and if somebody wouldn't have reached out and helped me, I wouldn't be where I'm at today." As of right now, it is uncertain who will become the infant's guardian, but Baumgart hopes that the donations collected will ease the transition to a new chapter of life for this unlucky baby.
