This is the kind of story that attracts a lot of attention because it touches on some very hot issues. When parents Krista and Jami Contreras welcomed baby Bay Windsor Contreras into their lives they weren't expecting the opposition they'd soon face when finding treatment for their daughter. The same-sex couple got married in 2012 and started their family a couple years later with the arrival of adorable baby Bay.
As Fox 2 News reports, the couple wanted to find a pediatrician and per their midwife's recommendation, sought help from Dr. Vesna Roi in Roseville, MI. Their initial impressions of Dr. Roi were overall very pleasant. However, the Contreras family received a shocking surprise when they paid a visit to the doctor's office shortly following Bay's birth, only to find that another doctor was going to be taking care of them. Krista and Jamie were told that after prayerful consideration, Dr. Roi had decided she could not care for their baby because of their sexual orientation. Fox 2 News highlights a letter that Dr. Roi later sent to the couple explaining that she felt she couldn't have established a proper doctor-patient relationship with the couple given their lifestyle.
Krista and Jamie were undoubtedly hurt, and very upset that their precious baby was already being exposed to such hurtful sentiments because of their relationship. I can't imagine the amount of frustration and anger the couple felt. They eventually moved on to find another pediatrician, but the amount of attention their experience with Dr. Roi at Eastlake Pediatrics attracted set off an onslaught of phone calls to the facility from people wishing to share their disappointment.
While Dr. Roi had the legal right to refuse to see the Contreras', her actions have sparked the argument that it may be legal, but it may not be right.
