This mother has been through more than I could've ever imagined. Her name is Helen Galsworthy and this video tells the gripping story of her journey after she attempted to commit suicide when she was just 18 years old. According to this video's YouTube description, Galsworthy was suffering from depression and a cocaine addiction when she decided to take her own life by lying on train tracks near her home in Eastleigh, Hampshire. The description goes on to explain that at the last minute Galsworthy tried to retract her legs from the tracks just as a train was passing over her, but acted too late and lost both of her legs below the knee. Galsworthy awoke in the hospital with her mother by her side, and another wave of sadness waiting to wash over her at the news that she'd lost both her legs.
Fortunately, the story doesn't end there. Galsworthy went on to become a mother, which gave her a newfound purpose in life. In the video, Galsworthy tells Barcroft TV, "Becoming a mum changed my life in the way that it suddenly just wasn't about me anymore." Her precious little boy is named Thomas and was just two years old when this video was recorded. It's clear to see from Galsworthy's story just how impactful her son has been in her life. The miracle of having children can bring a feeling into a person's life he/she may've never thought possible.
While I'm happy that Galsworthy is living a much better life than when she was 18 years old, the fact that her crippling depression drove her to those train tracks all those years ago still weighs very heavily on me. Depression is not a matter to be taken lightly. According to a site called Do Something, "Roughly 20 million people in the United States suffer from depression every year." That's quite a lot of people suffering from a mental disorder that has the power to drive one to suicide. One of the most important things to remember when
dealing with depression is that there is always a way to seek help. Resources for treating depression are only a click or phone call away, and if you know someone suffering from the disorder, help them in helping themselves; it could make a world of difference.
