There are few things in life more rewarding than giving to those in need. Whether it's a grand gesture or a small act of kindness, every deed makes a difference in the lives of those who've fallen on hard times. Proud girlfriend Lalaine Dawn Young witnessed a swoon-worthy moment of giving by her boyfriend Chris while the two were staying in the Philippines.
According to Young's description on YouTube, she and Chris were checked in at a hotel in Makati in late July when they came across a group of children sleeping on the pavement. Young explains that Chris, disturbed and saddened by the scene, asked her to wait near their belongings while he made a quick trip to the grocery store. Upon returning from the store, Chris told Young that he was going to deliver the groceries to the children they had passed.
Unbeknownst to Chris, Young was so moved by his generous gesture that she filmed him while he brought food to the kids. The footage may be shaky and blurry, but the content is powerful beyond words. As Young so eloquently states in the name of this video — "An Act of Compassion: The Man I Love Has the Most Beautiful Soul" —it is raw moments like these that make us marvel at the beauty of human compassion.
It is unclear exactly why the children in this video were found in the state they were in, but it is likely they are a part of the growing population of street children living in the Philippines. As described by the nonprofit organization Hope, "Street children comprise about 1-3% of the children and youth population of the major cities in the Philippines." The city of Makati is part of a region of the Philippines called Metro Manila, also known as the National Capital Region, a sprawling metropolis that is densely populated. Hope explains that Metro Manila is home to approximately 30,000 street children.
The problem of children living on the streets in the Philippines might seem insurmountable, but acts like the one demonstrated by Chris in Makati show that anyone can make a difference.
