The Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City, Missouri, provides emergency shelter to women and children who have been victims of domestic violence - or feel threatened by the possibility of it. Rose Brooks has been serving Kansas City for over three decades as they aim to break the cycle of domestic violence. According to Safe Horizon, one in every four women will be the victim of domestic abuse during their lifetime.
A few years ago, Rose Brooks received a call from a woman looking for help after she had been beaten by her boyfriend with a hammer. The center immediately made space for the woman, who made a request that they hadn't hear before. She wanted her 110-pound Great Dane to stay with her, whom she claimed help save her life by positioning himself between she and her attacker. Up until this point, there were no animals at Rose Brooks Center, but it was clear to them that they ought to make an exception. Now, some years later, it's not uncommon to see canines living there.
