When Nick and Bianca decided to spend the rest of their lives together, they had many of the same hopes and dreams that every other young couple in love might experience. They wanted to start a family, and they wanted to be able to conceive their children themselves. There was one unusual obstacle in their way, though: Nick and Bianca both identify as transgender and were in the process of saving money for gender reassignment surgery, something that would greatly affect their ability to have kids of their own. Gender reassignment surgery is extremely expensive, and Nick and Bianca knew that if they wanted to start a family, they would need to save that money for their kids.
Nick and Bianca decided that starting a family was too important to them to pass up, and so they ended up naturally conceiving two sons. Nick explains that the time he spent carrying his children was one of the darkest and most difficult periods of his life, and understandably so. Forced to assume a part of the identity that he had long since rejected, Nick felt torn between his physical state of "motherhood" and his mental state of "manhood." Struggling with this split sense of identity, he found it almost impossible to leave the house.
After the birth of their second son, Nick and Bianca decided to move to a different city for a fresh start. Up until the airing of this news story, almost no one in their community knew that they were a transgender couple. It was a daring move to participate in this interview, as Nick and Bianca understand that not everyone will be accepting of their situation, but they are hopeful that society as a whole will continue to be more and more understanding of LGBTQ issues as time goes on. With transgender celebrity figures such as Laverne Cox leading open, public dialogues around transgender identity, it's impossible not to see how times are changing. Even more recently, Caitlyn Jenner's very public reveal that she is a transgender woman directs the public eye toward the issue in an undeniable way; discussions of transgender identity used to be painfully lacking in mainstream media, and now they are unavoidable. As Nick says in the video below, it seems quite promising that the general American public will continue to learn about and be increasingly more understanding of those who are transgender.
When you look at Nick and Bianca together and with their children, it is undeniable that this is a loving and caring family. It's beautiful to see that two people who were fearful that they could never even find a loving partner were able to have a family together. Sure it might be difficult at certain points to explain to their children why their family is different, but those children will still grow up in a loving and supportive household. A child doesn't know how to be critical or judgmental because of gender or sexual orientation until someone teaches him or her to be so; a child simply understands love or a lack thereof. Nick and Bianca's boys show the kind of warmth and energy that comes only from love.
