A white woman walks into Denny Moe's, a Harlem barbershop, and receives a barrage of insults from one of its hairdressers. However, rather than stand idly by, the other black patrons rush to the woman's defense. This confrontation raises bigger questions about the issues of tolerance and respect and the way these folks handled the situation made us want to stand up and cheer.
What Would You Do? is a hidden camera show, broadcast as part of ABC's Primetime. Hosted by John Quiñones, it places unsuspecting bystanders in controversial social settings to gauge how they'll respond. This particular experiment feels especially pertinent given our country's current media cycle - race relations are strained and the news is inundated with stories of intolerance and hatred. That's why this segment is so refreshing - to see individuals choose love, compassion, and respect in the face of overt racism fills our hearts with hope. We could all learn a thing or two from these barbershop bystanders who aren't afraid to stand up for what's right.
