When Lindsey Arp met Ryan Haase, she thought she'd finally found the man of her dreams. In the interview below, Arp describes her first impression of Haase as pleasant. Haase had a son the same age as her own, and to Arp, he seemed like a good dad. Arp had her first child at age fifteen, and after dating and then moving in with Haase, became pregnant for a second time with a baby girl. Arp's second pregnancy marked the beginning of a horrific turn in her relationship with Haase. Arp describes how Haase's behavior started to become increasingly more controlling and abusive. Before long, Arp found herself feeling trapped in a violent relationship, and to make matters even more difficult, she fell pregnant for a third time.
On April 11, 2011, Arp made the decision to tell Haase he had to move out of the house. Arp describes the conversation as having gone well overall, but she had no idea what Haase was about to do to her later that night. When Arp retired to bed following her conversation with Haase, she heard the bedroom door open and in a moment that will be with her for the rest of her life, she experienced the feeling of boiling hot oil being poured over her body. Turns out, Haase was not going to be civil about being told he had to move out. Arp miraculously made it to a neighbor's house and was rushed to the hospital with fourth degree burns.
As for Haase, he was found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to 40 years in jail. The effects of Haase's cruel abuse will be with Arp for the rest of her life. While the events she suffered are utterly tragic, Arp is a survivor and a mother who can still watch her children grow up.
